Acadia National Park (with Puffins) Photo Tours and Workshops

from $500.00

Acadia National Park and the Puffins, Maine

Photo Workshops and Tours

I am an Authorized Permittee of the National Park

Join us on a photo tour or workshop to Acadia National Park and the Maine Coastline with professional photographer John Slonina. Acadia is one of the most dramatic areas on the east coast. Experience the magic of the rock-bound coast and soaring granite cliffs where the mountains meet the sea.

New: We will have two separate boat rides (weather permitting): The first will be a private sunset boat ride to photograph the beautiful coast along with Bass Harbor Lighthouse. The second boat ride will be for the puffins (see below).

The Puffins
We are planning to capture stunning photographs of puffins, razorbills, lighthouses, and seals. If the weather cooperates, we will have the opportunity to make a landing on the island. It’s important to note that this is the only location in the United States where visitors can step foot on an island inhabited by puffins, setting us apart from other boat tours that are unable to do so. The island has an abundance of birds. Some of the puffins and razorbills are just a few feet away. However, please keep in mind that this trip is subject to weather conditions.

Other Photo Opportunities:
This is the perfect time to capture the breathtaking beauty of this remarkable region. You will be treated to beautiful forests, mountain peaks, vibrant wildflowers, birds, serene lakes, streams, waterfalls, lighthouses, and tide pools. We will also keep our eyes peeled for the diverse wildlife that inhabits the park, such as seals, deer, beavers, eiders, and foxes. Unlike the bustling tourist season from July to September, you’ll experience a lot less traffic congestion and long lines at restaurants.

Join us for the chance to be among the first individuals to witness and capture the mesmerizing sunrise. The sweeping vistas from Cadillac Mountain offer a view that you will not forget. Our carefully planned itinerary is designed to make the most of every photo opportunity, and we maintain a flexible schedule to ensure we capture the best lighting conditions.

When:
June 10-14, 2024 (1 Space Left)

Directions: We will meet at hotel click here for directions:

Day 1: We will meet at the hotel at 4 pm for a quick meeting followed by a sunset shoot then dinner.

Day 2-4: We will travel to several different locations (depending on the lighting conditions) starting on location at sunrise. We will conclude with sunset. Each day will be a photographic adventure.

One day we will take a boat ride to a remote island off the Maine coast to photograph puffins, lighthouses and seals. This is an incredible photo opportunity since you can actually land on the island and not have a distant boat view. This is weather permitting.

From the blind on the island, we will target puffins, razorbills, and terns. Some of the birds are just a few feet away. On the boat ride back we will look for seals, lighthouses, and other hidden gems. The boat ride is included in the tour fee.

Day 5: Morning photo session before concluding the tour.

Skill and Fitness Level Requirements:
Anyone with an interest in photography from beginner to professional.

The participants should have a love of nature and enjoy the company of other people in a small group setting.

There are several short hikes on this trip. Most hikes are under one mile.

Participants should also be able to climb in and out of boats in sometimes slippery conditions carrying photo gear. They should also be comfortable with boats and changing sea conditions.

Participants should be in good health and self-sufficient.

Group size:
Our groups are small in size which allow for flexibility in our plans if interesting and unexpected photo opportunities present themselves. It also allows us to work with each participant to provide complete, informative, and helpful lessons.

Time of Day:
In June, sunrise is early in the morning and sunset is around 8:20 pm. Early morning and late afternoon have the best lighting for photography, less traffic and people. and less wind. There will be a long break in-between morning and afternoon shoots on most days. This would be a great time for a nap, lunch, or shopping on your own. We will also have some classroom time to review and critique work.

What’s Included:
Park admissions and permits.

Professional instruction

Boat ride out to see the puffins.

Three-hour sunset boat ride (Bass Harbor light, etc.)

Classroom Time:
This trip is planned to maximize time outdoors photographing. We may have classroom time to discuss photography, post processing and/or give photo critiques. I will customize the program(s) to cover the wishes of our small group.

After the Tour:
You will be invited to Zoom classes exclusive to past tour participants at no additional cost. Topics will be Lightroom, Photoshop, Wildlife Photography and Landscape Photography. We will offer 2-3 a year.

Transportation: Participants will travel in a comfortable passenger van throughout the tour, eliminating the need for you to drive your own car. Unlike many other tours that require participants to handle their own transportation, this arrangement ensures a hassle-free experience. It is particularly crucial because some of the most extraordinary photo spots can only accommodate one or two cars at a time. Our tour can access these exclusive locations without having to skip any of the best sights.

Not Included
Air Travel is not included.
